How to Prep Your Home When You’re Away for the Holidays
When you’re leaving your Miramar, Florida, home to enjoy the holidays elsewhere, there are several things you’ll want to do to prepare your home while you’re gone. Let’s look at a few things you can do before you go.
Use Your Smart Thermostat
When you’re away for the holidays, one of the best aspects of a smart thermostat is that you can pre-schedule it so that the temperature is just a bit on the lower side while you’re not there. You can also set the schedule to raise to a comfortable temperature before you arrive home, so you don’t walk into an uncomfortable house.
Download the Remote Control App
Many smart or connected thermostats have an app you can download on your cell phone or mobile device that allows you to adjust the temperature remotely. If your plans change and you’re coming home earlier or later than planned, simply adjust the pre-set schedule on your smart thermostat. Also, if a cold front happens to sweep through while you’re away, you can raise the temperature remotely in the house to compensate for the extra chill factor.
Use Home Automation for Lights and Security
Investing in security cameras and automated lights will help ensure that your home stays secure while you’re gone. Modern automated lighting systems allow you to pre-set on/off times at varying intervals. You can also have your television or radio come on at various times of the day and evening so it sounds like someone is home. Security cameras with real-time feed are great for keeping an eye on your home and property. If something is amiss when you return, you can go through the video history.
Don’t forget simple things like closing the drapes, taking out the trash, cleaning out the refrigerator, and having a neighbor collect the mail.
