3 Signs It’s Time to Change the HVAC Filter
The air conditioner in your Coral Springs, Florida home is critical in maintaining a comfortable temperature and controlling the humidity levels when it’s warm outside. In order to keep it functioning properly, you need to keep up with some regular maintenance, including replacing the filter often. If you haven’t remembered to change it recently, check out these signs that indicate it’s definitely time for a replacement filter.
Excessive Running
The filter in your air conditioning system is the first layer of protection that keeps pollen, dirt, dander, pet hair, and other contaminants from getting into the unit and settling in the ducts. When debris can move into the system, it decreases the efficiency, which means your AC has to work harder to produce and move cool air.
If you notice that your air conditioner is running for long periods of time, this could be a sign that your filter has reached the end of its life. A dirty air filter restricts the airflow through the AC, so swap it out to see if that fixes the problem.
Strange Noises or Odors
An air conditioning system will make some noises when it’s starting, stopping, or running, but you shouldn’t hear any high-pitched squealing or grinding sounds. The squeal could mean that the airflow is restricted, which can happen when the filter is so clogged that air can’t move through it. A blower motor that can’t move air might make a squealing or squeaking sound. If you detect a “hot” smell, your blower motor might be overheating. Airflow helps keep the unit cool, so a clogged filter can cause damage to your HVAC system.
Poor Indoor Air Quality
The filter in your air conditioner also helps to keep contaminants out of the air. Poor indoor air quality can indicate the need to swap out the filter. You could notice an increase in asthma or allergy flare-ups, or you might experience symptoms like headaches, congestion, and sore throats.
